Happy Sunshine Week!!!
You are probably thinking – Chanel, what are you talking about?
That is problem number one. Every resident of the United States of America should know what Sunshine Week is and its origin.
So let me inform you. We will call it my patriotic duty.
Sunshine Week is a national initiative to promote a discussion about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Basically, it highlights YOUR right to know. Everyone and every organization is invited to participate.
The initiative is recognized March 16-22 but you can exercise your right to know at any time during the year.
You may think that this glorious week still does not apply to you. You are probably thinking that there is nothing you can do. YOU ARE WRONG!!
there are a couple of things that you can do to test your local, county and statewide government on their transparency. Here are a few tips:
- Ask for a public document from City Hall that you have been wanting to see. The law requires that they turn it over to you in a reasonable manner. Some costs may apply.
- Ask for public documents on a state or federal level.
- Inform yourself on the open meeting laws in your area. This could be done by a simple Google or a look at your state website. There is no excuse to be informed.

Let the sun shine in. Or stop complaining about the darkness. You have every opportunity to know what is going on through public records. All you have to do is ask.
I’m just saying.
